Dear Diary… February 2019: Recovery, Mindfulness and An Anniversary

Happy March everyone! Spring doesn’t arrive for another few weeks but with the way the weather has been recently you would think it was already here! (Not that I’ve any idea what the weather is like as I’m still stuck indoors). That said, as lovely as it is to have clear blue skies, a gentle breeze and the temperature in the high-teens and early-twenties, I can’t help but be slightly worried about what this all means. Global Warming is happening right before our eyes.

So far this year life has been pretty quiet as I’ve been on bed/sofa rest but I went to the hospital earlier this week and I have completed stage 1 of healing and am now embarking on stage 2 which is all about the quality of the final heal. I’m allowed to put my foot down on the floor now but can’t bear weight on it yet – that’s something I’ll be working on over the next 6 weeks or so and hopefully in a couple of months I’ll be able to walk without the need for crutches. Fingers crossed! To be honest, I didn’t realise it was such a long process; I think I thought it would be a few weeks and I’d be up and about, but that’s not the case. It’ll all be worth it in the end though if it’s worked.

(By the way, my Consultant hasn’t turned up for a single one of my appointments – not a single one!)

Although I’ve been stuck indoors for most of the year so far, I haven’t had the opportunity to get bored. During the day I’m working on the day job and my evenings and weekends have been filled with lots of things that feel good for the soul. I’ve been reading (join my online book club here), watching Netflix, I started a mindfulness book, I’ve done a jigsaw whilst listening to my Spotify playlist knocking out some absolute bangers, and I spent absolutely ages working on admin and the back-end of this blog. I’ve always known I’m a homebird and happy in my own company but this has been a real test of that and I’m genuinely quite happy being a little hermit. I do miss getting outdoors though; I can’t wait to be able to go out and about again!

Following on from what I just said, I’m going to publish my first Recent Reads post in the next few days, so if you want to see what I’ve been reading keep an eye out for that. I did really well in January but February has seen me really struggling with a book but I’m determined to finish it – it’s true crime so my genre of choice but the way the author writes really grates on me. I’ll explain more in that post when it’s live.

Netflix has taken an absolute battering from me whilst I’ve been laid up and we’ve watched some great shows. My top picks are:
Abducted In Plain Sight (literally the most shocking thing I’ve watched for ages)
Behind The Curve (about flat earthers, worth watching if only for the final minute)
Night Flyers (sci-fi drama, not normally my kind of thing but I loved it)
Escape At Dannemorra (a prison break drama and one of the best thing I’ve watched for ages)

I mentioned briefly earlier that I’ve started a mindfulness book (I don’t know if that’s the right name but that’s what I’m calling it). Basically it’s a little notebook that I use whenever I feel like my mind needs stilling. It has no real rhyme nor reason, I just sort of turn my brain off and see what happens – sometimes I write about what’s on my mind, sometimes I doodle… it’s just a way of taking time out and letting my brain slow. I also did a jigsaw at the weekend which was a great way of resetting the ol’ brain box – I put my Spotify on shuffle and spent 3 hours thinking about nothing except where the next piece went and the lyrics to the songs I was listening to. I felt so bloody zen at the end of it, I’m definitely going to buy some more jigsaws off of Amazon for taking some time out at weekends!

February also saw Ben and I reach our 4th anniversary – four whole years together! On the day itself we just gave each other cards as our gift to each other is always putting our money towards a day out or meal together. This year we are going to go for dinner at a restaurant near us that we’ve had our eye on for a while, but we need to wait until I’m a bit more mobile so it’s on ice for a bit. I’ve already had a look through the menu though and I’m very excited!

Unfortunately that’s pretty much it for me right now… My newsletter will be hitting inboxes any moment now (you can sign up for that here) and, as I mentioned, I’ll share my Recent Reads in a couple of days too so you can see what books I’ve been rating and why I’m struggling so much with the one I’m trying to read at the moment. I always read books based on recommendations so hopefully it might be helpful to some of you. (Don’t forget about my online book club – read more about it here).
