It doesn’t take me long to fall off the wagon, does it? I did one ‘5 Things That Make Me Happy…’ post, then the following week, nothing. Whoops!
In my defence, last Friday was mega busy, with the day job being full-on, no lunch break and then hopping on a train to Swindon for a weekend of adventure. So I’m going to do a round-up of the past two weeks instead of one in today’s post, even it out a bit, y’know?
I’ve been a poorly little person this week and felt absolutely drained on Wednesday so missed out on celebrating my friend’s 40th birthday (sad face) instead going straight to bed and ending up sleeping for 22 hours! I feel much better now but think I might try to have a restful weekend… (yeh right!)
Despite the lurg the past couple of days, the past fortnight has been filled with good stuff – here’s what’s been making me happy…
It feels like ages since Ben and I had a ‘date day’ together. We used to do them pretty regularly, but I guess since we started living together there’s often other more important things for us to be doing – housework, sorting out the garden, decorating, running errands – plus we have so much going on this year that finding a spare day for fun and frolics has proved pretty difficult. However, back at the beginning of February (!) we booked April 29th as a day for us to head up to London and just spend some time enjoying each others’ company. We explored back alleys and quiet side roads, we ate food, and we enjoyed a bevvie or two (the photo above is a Smokey Old Fashioned in The Alchemist, a twist on my favourite cocktail). All in all it was a really lovely day, finished off with heading home to watch the Joshua -v- Klitschko fight – the perfect Saturday if you ask me!
Maid of Honour Duties
As mentioned, I headed to Swindon to visit Sian and Dan last weekend for my dress fitting for their wedding, plus I got to go with Sian while she had her wedding hair trial. The style she’s gone for is absolutely beautiful and now, having seen her hair, make-up and both her dresses for the big day, I can picture in my head what she’s going to look like and I’m so excited; she’s going to look amazing! It’s less than a month now until their big day and I can’t wait – to see my best friend marry the love of her life is going to be so special.
Sian and Dan are both National Trust members so after her hair trial we visited two properties which are within driving distance of them – Lacock and Avebury. I love wandering around old buildings and the countryside, trying to picture in my mind what life used to look like there, and so this was my ideal way to spend a sunny Spring day. Those few hours exploring two parts of what the UK has to offer only served to ignite my desire to see more of this country and I think next year I might try and book a few long weekends away to other areas – research is definitely needed but Loch Ness is right up there near the top of the list!
(Avebury Manor is all the house goals).
This week I popped along to an event held by Homesense to showcase some of their new range (stunning by the way, blog post to follow) and it was so nice to be back out there.
The Human Connection
This one dawned on me this morning while I was on my commute to work. Sitting next to me was a boy who must have been about 8 years old, quickly scribbling down his homework for the day, apologising whenever he nudged me by accident and again when he was packing his bag up and bashed other people with it. For some reason, I found the whole thing really sweet and it made me smile, and that got me thinking about human connection – that moment a stranger comes into you life for just a few seconds and you share a moment. Whether it’s a joke in a queue at the supermarket, a look across the train and a roll of the eyes in solidarity because someone is playing a game with their volume on, a grin as they stop their car and wave you across the road, or giving you a hand when you’re struggling with something (reaching top shelves and luggage racks for 5ft2 me!) There’s something about those little moments that makes me smile; a reminder, I guess, that we’re all human.
What’s made you happy this week?
