I love having a blog, I really do. Although I’ve had numerous ‘wobbles’ and crises of confidence over the past 12-months or so and debated giving it up several times, I always come back because, ultimately, this site is such an integral part of my life that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to let it go.
It started as a hobby, a way to wile away the time, but it became more than that – a documentation of my life, the various chapters of my story, right up to where we are today.
Over the years I’ve had a few people tell me they’d like to start blogging and ask me for a little advice and guidance as they’ve gone about it and, although I’m no blogging expert (far from it) I’m always happy to share what little knowledge I do have and help people find their feet. So, I thought I’d share a few of my ideas for starting a blog, just in case any of you reading this are considering giving it a go!
I occasionally write about fashion but am in no way a fashionista and am fairly certain people would get bored of seeing my dull outfits repeated time and time again. However, fashion is a big market and there are lots of people looking for inspiration or news of current and up-coming trends – this is where fashion blogs step in. Whether you’re interest is in High Street or high end (or a mix of both) this is a popular topic that there is definitely an audience for. There’s also a whole spectrum of content you can include from outfit photos, to wishlist, to information about the latest gossip in the fashion world. There are also lots of opportunities to work with brands, although I always tell people that you should only blog if you really genuinely want to, not just to bag yourself some free stuff.
Food. Food glorious food. Despite having two shelves of cookbooks in my kitchen, I never ever refer to them when I’m looking for inspiration; instead I log on to the internet and read through food blogs. I honestly think that food blogging is a great niche to get in to and there’s such a wide range of them available that there literally is something for everyone. A perk of being a food blogger may be that you are invited to review restaurants of products for home cooking, but as I said above, getting freebies should never be the reason you start writing.
This is where I fit in. Writing about lifestyle is a bit of a cop-out in some senses I suppose as it means you can write about anything and everything, whether that be food, fashion, travel, interior design, or just something you’ve watched on TV. Personally, for me, lifestyle blogs are my go-to when I’m looking for something to read. I’m endlessly nosey and so curious about other peoples’ lives and thoughts – let’s be honest, if you could read somebody’s diary and get away with it, you would, wouldn’t you? That’s exactly how I see lifestyle blogs – diaries that are left with their pages open for us to sneak a peek at.
Health and Fitness Blog
If you’re a health and fitness nut then this is a great niche to get in to. It seems like the world has become more body conscious than ever and everybody is trying to lose weight or get fit, so if you’ve got skills and knowledge you can share, or even if you’re going on a journey from couch potato to hot (chip?) then you’re bound to find yourself an audience.
Honestly, there are so many different topics you could write about; the internet is such a huge place that there really is room for everyone to have a voice. But make sure you’re writing for the right reasons, don’t do it because you want to become the next celeb blogger millionaire or because you want to get sent a load of free stuff by companies – they can smell a freebie-hunter out like a rat; they want to work with people who are passionate, reliable and have integrity.
And, in all honesty, there really isn’t a huge amount of freebies/money in blogging anyway. I started for the love of writing and I continue to do so now; when the love goes, that’s when I’ll say goodbye to this little space on the world wide web.
